The Influence of Diffusion of Responsibility on Behavior
In her article in the very well mind website, Kendra Cherry defines diffusion of
responsibility as ‘a phenomenon in which people are likely to take no action in the presence of a
large group when someone needs help’ (Cherry, 2018). She further examines this phenomenon
by looking at the murder of a young woman near her home in New York. The woman, Catherine
(Kitty) Genovese was murdered in 1964 and none of the 38 witnesses came to her aid or called
emergency services. It was this sad story that spurred psychologists to try and understand the
human helping behavior. They wanted to know why when in a crowd, people would just stand by
instead of lending a helping hand. This brought by the name the bystander effect (Cherry, 2018).
