Gender stereotyping is increasingly common in the healthcare industry. While males
dominate the physician profession, the nursing profession and other areas of caregiving are
dominated by females. In this case, Masoudi (2014) attributes forces such as the perception of
the society, stereotyping in various healthcare professions, and gender discrimination in
hiring. This paper will explore the historical and contemporary aspects of gender stereotyping
in the nursing field while at the same time exploring public policy debates relevant to the
topic and possible solutions to the social issue.
Historical aspect of gender stereotyping in nursing
The nursing field has historically been dominated by females. As reported by Karimi
and Masoudi (2015), the dominance of females in the nursing field and the resultant gender
stereotyping can be attributed to the founders of nursing such as Nightingale and the
revolution that took place in the healthcare industry. In this case, this stereotyping came in the
wake of the wars that occurred in the 19th and 20th centuries. Since females were barred from
participating in the war as military personnel, their roles were reduced to homemakers and
