Description

Review your grade/feedback for Response Paper 1 or 2. (View this week's online learning resources for further explanation on revision). Then, do the following:

1) Revise and edit at least one paragraph (and up to the entire paper). Revision means "re-seeing" the content: choosing new words, rephrasing phrases and sentences; replacing old content and/or adding support, context, or detail to existing content; and correcting any errors on the original draft, from spelling/punctuation and grammatical errors to quotation/citation issues. Post your original paragraph(s) first, followed by your revision of that same passage.

2) Address some or all of the questions below in your main forum post, underneath your revised paragraph:

  • What was your biggest weakness in the original passage? Does your revised version address this issue?
  • What resources, such as books or web pages, did you find useful while attempting your revision?
  • What aspects of the revision process did you find most interesting and/or challenging?
  • What did you learn from the revision process? Do you think that future papers would benefit from applying the revision process before submission?

Remember: All textual references (quotes, paraphrases) should be cited in MLA format (in-text citations and Works Cited).

FEEDBACK:

Good work here overall. You have some great ideas, many of which are very thoughtful and insightful. I noted a few places that need evidence or support, and there are some grammar issues throughout (nothing major, just word choice errors, sentence fragments, etc.). I'd suggest working with SmarThinking tutoring for help on just polishing up those little things so your great ideas can shine through even more.

The story is about a southern family which decides to go on vacation to Florida (pg. 5), but the irony revolves how the real journey takes place inside their lives. The story tries to expand the meaning of good man and how it is hard to find one. The characters view themselves as good based on their moral codes which are flawed, leaving them blinded of their own self-righteousness. O’Connor portrays her characters in a way that they reveal the underlying message of the story. She suggests that people often use religion for selfish reasons which. The grandmother who is self-absorb drives her family crazy with her old-fashioned attitude and comments; her action seems to be the downfall of her family. Throughout the story, the misfit is seen as the symbol of evil since he escaped from jail. The Holsey 2 grandmother believes she is better that the people around her. The meaning of good or moral virtue is not particular the good that the mother portrays. Though she is just as evil as the Misfit and her action seems to be the downfall of her family this reveals the theme of elusive definition of a Good man. Within the story, there are unique characters, setting and plot that seem to emphasize the theme which makes the entirety of the story an iconic piece. The Grandmother is the main character who symbolizes a savior with grace who tries to save the misfit from evil. The grandmother purpose is to save the evil character, misfit. At the end of the story, she realizes that he still going to kill her and she touches him in the shoulder. The misfit sprang back and shots her in the chest three times. When he shoots the grandmother he recoils from the grace she offers he not only does she reject the warmth of her touch but also her Grace. The story is set on a road trip to Florida but the irony revolves how the real journey takes place inside their lives. The Grandmother who is self- centered attempts to make the family to change their trip destination away from the Misfit, an escaped convict. The setting of the story emphasizes the theme of chance. Bailey and the grandmother choose an action that leads to them encountering with the Misfit. The grandmother press Bailey and his children to go in the plantation despite it involving traveling onto the dirt road and she kwon there may be a chance that Misfits and his gang drives the same road. The plot of the story is set on a fundamental list of ingredients: initial situation, climax, suspense, conflict complication and a great conclusion which emphasis all the themes of the story. O’Conner creates her characters to portray the constant batter between evil and good. In the beginning of the story the author introduces unappealing family who plans to go for a trip. Holsey 3 The Grandmother who is self- centered attempts to make the family to change their trip destination away from the Misfit, an escaped convict The first symbols that are widely used in the story are the grandmother’s hat. The hat has been used to symbolize two aspects related to her grandmother’s nature. First, the symbol is used to symbolize the grandmother’s selfish nature. The author tells us how the grandmother wore the hat every day even when she died she still had the hat. In addition, the hat has been used to symbolize her hypocritical beliefs. As a Christian, one ought to put other peoples need first, however, the grandmother never worried about other people, not even her own family. As the story progresses, the grandmother is involved in an accident but her hat, despite been damaged remains pinned to her head (pg. 19). The author states that the grandmother touched her hat making the brim of the hat to break off falling to the ground. This is used to indicate that her image had been destroyed but did not change her ways. However, when her entire family is murdered the narrator states that the grandmother realized that they had something in common with the Misfit; according to the narrator, she realized that they were both children of God. As a result, she cared for someone else other than herself and reached out to the Misfit showing forgiveness and empathy. The second symbol used by the author is the Misfit automobile. According to the description of the automobile; big black battered hearse-like automobile (pg.20), is used to depict death. Death, in this case, is of her family that has been looming over her family from the first paragraph when the grandmother announces information of a loose Misfit. Death has frequently appeared throughout the story and in some instance, the grandmother began worrying about her appearance if she would end up dead on a highway. Generally, the automobile does not only Holsey 4 bring death to the family but also to the old South since the ideologies and views through which she had been brought up were slowly dying. Finally, the author uses numerous animals throughout the story. For instance, the Misfit has been described as a different breed of dog. In addition, the author describes the green headkerchief as having two points like a rabbit’s ears (pg. 6). As a result, the use of animals has been used to show the instincts of the animals used. Generally, animals do not think about the consequences of their actions and this is the case when Bailey did not consider how dangerous it was in the old South due to a loose killer. Further, the author continues to relate the characters' behavior with that of animals. For instance, when the accident occurs, the family does not move nor do anything but just wait there for help to come along. “You’re The Misfit!... I recognize you at once,” (pg. 22) a statement from the grandmother when she is faced by the Misfit. In this situation, we see the relation of animal’s predator instincts since the Misfit descends on the family like a pack of wolves. The main themes derived from the story are chance, grace and spiritual blindness. The themes of the story clear indicate the worldview according to the author. For instance, the theme chance indicates that humans have the power of choice and regardless of the choices we make we should be aware of the consequences. Both the grandmother and Bailey make different choices throughout the story and this choice can be attributed to the fate the two encountered. According to the author choices that we make will often determine our future and is therefore important to ensure we make calculated choices. In regards to grace, the authors try to explain how the grandmother believed in herself and wanted people to see her as a lady. As a result, grace helps us see ourselves for who we are and guides human to spiritual salvation.
