In journalism, eyewitnesses are highly relied on as sources of information and their
reports are generally trusted to be true. Not only in news, eyewitness testimonies in courts are
generally believed to be true by the jurors and are used to convict suspects. There are a number
of factors that may affect the accuracy of these reports including the inability to correctly
reconstruct memories, stress and anxiety and narrow focus of attention (Rose & Beck, 2016).
These are factors that are always ignored when reporters are collecting information from
eyewitnesses of an event. The inaccuracy of eyewitness reports has been witnessed severally in
judicial systems over the years, where innocent suspects have been wrongly convicted.
Eyewitness news is therefore not reliable and alternative methods should be applied to determine
the accuracy of the eyewitness reports.
