While the basic narrative of The Dream of Rood is a version of the Crucifixion of Jesus, it is filled with heroic sentiments throughout. The Crucifixion is told in a style that could be easily read as a Heroic tale. The main “hero” is now fighting on behalf of the sinners and instead of revenge. Jesus’ followers are encouraged to show mercy towards the executioners and to seek the “tree of glory”. The words used to describe his approach to the crucifixion reveal the poet’s portray of Jesus as a courageous warrior. “Then the young Hero stripped himself—that was God Almighty—strong and stouthearted. He climbed on the high gallows, bold in the sight of many, when he would free mankind”1 (Pg. 1). Instead of using the words Jesus or Christ, the poet calls him a “young hero” or “mankind’s brave King”. According to the Introduction to “The Dream of Rood”, Jesus was the hero, the conflict was the crucifixion and the salvation was his victory. While the poem does seem as a hero’s journey, there is still an appeal to the common man. The concept of a hero is being more reachable. One does not need to be a great warrior, swearing to his “landowner” to swear allegiance to a new lord (Jesus and the religious doctrine). Christianity was made more accessible than Heroism, an equal opportunity to take part in the belief, rather than only a selected few of Heroes. The word redemption in a Christian sense, is Jesus and his sacrificial death, freeing the people from the slavery of sin. Redemption involves the concept of going from something to something else. Jesus freed people from their bondages of sin to the freedom of a new life. Redemption itself is an act of God’s grace, rescuing his people and restoring them to their rightful place.
