Online Voting System

Online voting is also referred to as electronic voting since it involves voting on
computers connected to the internet. An excellent online voting system must fulfill some
requirements before being adapted fully. The requirements include being secure, audibility,
being cost-effective, accessibility and stability. These are the requirements that an online voting
system must meet before it's rolled out. Some countries have rolled out the use of online voting
for their general election. These countries include Canada, Brazil, India, Estonia, Philippines,
U.K, and many others. The electronic voting system is usually paperless and the make the use of
EVM machines that are connected to the internet ( Kaliyamurthie, Udayakumar, Parameswari,
& Mugunthan, 2013) Many countries have adopted the method of online voting as they feel it's
more secure but a lot of people still have doubts about the system. This paper will try to asses if
the electronic system of voting can be trusted during and after an election to deliver credible
results.
An online voting system cannot be fully trusted because of one of the most prominent
issues, and that is hacking. Many countries like Estonia that have been using the system have
always reported malicious activities within the software that runs the online voting system. Some
of the malicious activities were carried out by people trusted with administering the elections.
The Estonia election system of election was so messed up that there were recommendations that
required it to be stopped (Springall, Finkenauer, Durumeric, Kitcat, Hursti, MacAlpine, &
Halderman, 2014). One individual hacks an online voting system they can easily manipulate the
vote tally. They can increase the votes for their most preferred candidate, and this will lead to
biased election results. This can be done by the hackers hacking either the voting machines of
those individuals that are voting or by attacking the software itself. The online voting system

usually has a security team, but there are very sophisticated hackers with numerous viruses that
they can use to attack the system and manipulate votes. The online voting system can also be
connected to a third party by hackers such that individuals will be able to vot...
