DATABASE-MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS
Definition of Terms in Database-Management Systems
Database management system is a software that is used to create and control databases,
and they make it possible for the end users of the database to be able to create, read, delete
and update data in those databases (Date, 2012). The database management systems are
responsible for creating a user interface with the database.
File processing systems are programs that were used to administer the files stored in a
computer. The file processing systems preceded database management systems where
information was stored in the form of files (Date, 2012). These systems were used to modify
and access the required files. The recent development in technology has shifted from use of
files to database administered using the database management systems.
Data inconsistency is a situation where same data appears in different files in different
formats resulting in duplication of data which undermines data integrity (Gill, 2008). Data
inconsistency necessitates the need to compare the two versions of data to determine which to
use. For example, if in the database there are two versions of consumer's telephone numbers,
it becomes hard to decide on which to use.
Data mining is a process that a company uses to sort through large data sets to help get
useful information in those large data sets (Panneerselvam, 2011). For example, to identify
the demand of a particular commodity among the customers, the company would analyze the
acquisition of customers over a period to determine and help predict the likely demand in a
specific time. Data mining helps to predict future outcomes through the use o...
