The American Civil War began in 1861 as a result of disputes between the northern and
southern states of America. The disputes concerned slavery, the westward expansion as well as the
rights of the state. Slavery was however the main concern. The civil war, also known as the war between
states, ended in 1865. (www.britannica.com) The economy of the northern states relied on
manufacturing and industry while that of the southern states relied on large scale farming. The black
slaves were used to provide labor in the farms. The northern states opposed slavery and therefore made

the confederacy after rebels attacked the Fort Sumter. (www.britannica.com)
