Chapter five
Communication between different genders at the workplace can be very difficult because
of the tensions and fears that arise.Each gender tends to have its own conversational styles.
Deborah Tenannan has advanced two theories between the two main genders which she thinks
affects most of the conversational styles. Deborah says that men learn to send and receive messages
through the status lens. Basically; the idea of men subscribing to the status lens is because they
want to be seen as the most powerful or influential in the organization. On the other hand, the
female gender sends and receives its message through the connection lens (Harrison, 2018). This
simply means that many women tend to focus on individuals who are close or far away from them
both physiologically and emotionally.
