An amendment to the Fourth Amendment of the US constitution to cater for police duress and mistreatment should be implemented. The police have been abusing this amendment for a long time now and citizens have simply been saying nothing about it. There are many cases whereby the police ambush black family homes with the suspicion of them having guns or smoking bhang, but they come in without any search warrant or authorization. When they come in, they even sometimes harass and mistreat the people at their homes and force them to produce evidence that will incriminate them. Although this is utter harassment, nobody often follows up on such issues and the affected people are often scared of even reporting the matter to the police, as they are just same people who might elevate the issue. One counter argument would be that it already outlines consequences for failure to follow it but it does not precisely talk about the police in this case. The police are emphasized on because they are always the first people to misuse others especially if they find out that the people belong to minority group. The fourth amendment should give punitive measures for law enforcement officers who engage in such acts and punish them highly to prevent a repeat of the same and uphold it (Tomkovicz, 2011). In conclusion, I believe that the Fourth Amendment was created with an aim of protecting citizens from harassment by the government through the law enforcement officers. When the same still happens and it is the police who harass citizens, then this becomes serious matter that must be settled once and for all. Reference Tomkovicz, J. J. (2011).
