Definition of diseases/disorders and examples of their different types that fall under it
Statistical data gathered from the Disease Prevention Center (2017) shows that more than ten million
people or about ten percent (10%) of the population of the United States are diabetic (Lloyd, et al, 2018).
Out of this number, twenty million people are already diagnosed with diabetes while ten million are yet to be
diagnosed. By ages between 20 to 44 years, five million are already diagnosed with diabetes while four
million are yet to be diagnosed. 14 million at the age of forty-five years are diagnosed with diabetes while 16
million are not yet diagnosed. A physically active person can reduce the risks of contracting type 2 diabetes
by between 30 to 50%. This is experienced on those who carry out exercises for moderate intensity activities
for thirty minutes per day. American Diabetes Association (2017) recommend diabetes screening for each
overweight adult over forty-five years of age and factors of risk include having a child who weighs over nine
pounds, family history, obesity, and ethnicity (Pacific Islander, Asian American, African American,
Hispanic, and Native American) (Nathan, 2015). According to the nursing diagnosis, most people contact
diabetes because they consume more than body requirements associated with the intake of foods which
exceed the needs of the body as evidenced by a gain of weight.
