Television as a cultural forum
Hirsch and Newcomb argue that television serves as a public forum and a cultural
forum. This argument is valid considering the approaches followed while presenting the news
and the role of the public. The public is allowed to make its analysis of the news and choose a
side through access to multiple perspectives of the news. In addition, it promotes and sustains
hegemonic ideals within the society and, in the course of this, it functions as a tool that
stimulates discussions among the members of the society by creating questions that address
social consciousness and issues surrounding the society. In the case of Betty the girl engineer,
it is clear that television introduces various debates on social issues surrounding the society
such as feminism. However, television often fails to close these discussions and, instead, it
leaves the society to make its judgment and debate on the topic.
