There has been a drastic increase in prison population in the US as in 1980, there were 1.8 M incarcerated individuals and by 2016, there were 6.6 M (National Institute of Justice Reports). These aren't just numbers, these are people in the correctional institutions of the country. A significant number of the population is in jail yet they are treated in inhumane ways. They are denied their rights yet they are as human as the rest of the population. All inmates should be respected because they have a value to the community even as inmates, they have a family who look upon them, and the humanity they get will quicken their rehabilitation process All inmates should be respected because they have a value to the community even as inmates, they have a family who look upon them, and the humanity they get will quicken their rehabilitation process.Jailed people have a value to the community. Jailed people have value to the community even as inmates. Criminologists have shown that even though inmates are considered as dangers to the society, their presence in Prison helps to reduce crime rates in the society. Research has shown that Prisons offer high school diploma and degree training. They also offer vocational training. This helps to reduce recidivism as convicts can find work as soon as they are released(Vacca, 2004). Research has also shown that convicts who maintain contact with their family or spouse while in prison have lower recidivism rate than convicts who don't (Carlson, 1991). This shows that even though convicts were incarcerated, they can help reduce the community's crime rate by avoiding re-committing crime. Allowing convicts to be in touch with their family helps make the rehabilitation process more effective. This therefore shows that convicts helps the community grow economically by finding jobs and also helps the community to be safer by reducing crime rates. Feedback ReflectionFeedback from Writing Activity 1: Consider these enhancements as you continue with the next draft: (1) Improved “persuasive writing” can be met by reviewing this link: http://lrs.ed.uiuc.edu/students/fwalters/cohere.ht... (2) Note an approach to writing community issue essay: http://faculty.fullerton.edu/jcho/essay5.htm (3) APA formatting: https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01... (4) Review course material for APA guidelines and sample papers. (5) review “Student Center” tab for APA guidelines and sample papers, and note “Instructor Insights” in the weekly tabs. How Feedback Was Used: In activity 1, I chose to write on the topic "Human Treatment of the Inmate". From the feedback from my professor, the work adhered to most of the requirements in terms of the layout and the correct choice of the topic. Despite the excellent work done, the professor reviewed my paper and gave me some feedbacks to make it better. The feedback was on the persuasive writing and paper format. With the help of the links provided, I was to observe these two in the next draft. I was advised to make the draft more persuasive and also adhere to the APA format of writing. The first feedback was to use APA format in my next writing. I realized that I had not observed all the formats of APA paper. After going through the provided links, I realized that my references were well cited according to the required form. From the materials provided, I learnt of many other details of APA paper that I did not know I now know that whenever I am using the above format, I must differentiate the first page. The topic has to be preceded with words "running head" in the header though I am not aware of its implication. I had failed to differentiate my paper in my previous activity. I included it in activity 2. How Feedback Will Help You with Future Writing: I now know how to generate references electronically unlike in the past where I used to do it manually. This technique will be helpful to me in future writing. In later essays, I expect that I will manage to do in-text citations, especially where authors are more than two. I also realized that the topic I had chosen to write about was very controversial. It involved many parties including the government. The government agencies are likely to oppose my recommendations. They will be reluctant given that the current system grants little freedom to the inmate. Imprisonment is a corrective mechanism that currently denies inmates liberty as a way of punishment. Therefore giving them freedom means adjusting part of the system to accommodate them. Because of this, the feedback was essential in making me write a persuasive essay. My intention while making the second draft was to incite the government to respond to my finding. Similarly, I intended to create a discussion topic that will magnify this issue. I plan to use this writing style in future writing to arise many discussion topics. To persuade my reader, I wrote the second draft with emotions and emotions. After reading the article, I felt that writing with passion would give me an unfair advantage over the audience. In future writing, I will be including passion in almost all principles which are active with human nature. In future, I will always strive to make an emotional appeal to my readers. Like in this draft, it will draw the government into the particular plight of the inmates and make relevant authority to feel empathy towards the inmates. WRITING ASSINGMENT 2 ( FEEDBACK ) BELOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Hello Sarah: well done with your analysis and reflections here. Stronger APA citations and integrating of citations can enhance your analysis. Note expectations moving forward: Support claims with at least three (3) quality, relevant references. Use credible, academic sources available through Strayer University’s Resource Center. Consider these improvements: Please review for persuasive essay writing:(1)https://www.hamilton.edu/academics/centers/writing... (2) https://www.umuc.edu/current-students/learning-res... GCCCD Historical Perspective of Traditional Medicine Discussion
In Topic #2, we looked at the origins and events of the Salem Witchcraft Trials in 1692. This fascinating episode from colonial history served as a great cautionary tale about community fears and the experience of living through the damaging effects of a "witch hunt." Still today, historians, authors and the general public still probe for answers as to why this event happened in Salem Village. In this discussion, write two (2) posts where you address any of the following three questions about the Salem Witchcraft Trials or a reply to another student. Your two posts may be answering two of the three questions OR one post that answers one of the three questions and then a reply to another student. Therefore, after your initial post answering one of the three questions, you choose what you want for your second required post - answer to another question or reply to a student. Before writing your 1st post, if you have not already done so, watch and take notes from the online lecture “Colonial New England in the 17th Century" to learn the historical background of colonial New England and the Salem Witchcraft Trials. Then open the Word file found also in the Discussions module that contains articles on the Salem Witchcraft Trials. They are “The Afflicted Girls of Salem Village” by Kathy Weiser and “The Theory That May Explain What Was Tormenting the Afflicted in Salem’s Witch Trials" by Nik DeCosta-Klipa. Read these articles to help decipher reasons for the afflicted girls’ physical symptoms and reasons they accused other villagers of being witches. Understanding the content of these articles are necessary to help formulate your post. Here are the questions you can address:In general terms, what do you believe are the strengths and shortcomings of ascribing medical explanations to long ago historical figures whom present-day doctors cannot directly diagnose? Do you believe with brilliant insight, it can be effective? Or is at best hit and miss? Or do you believe it to be completely flawed? Can for example, modern-day doctors accurately diagnose if the afflicted girls of Salem Village suffered from stress, epilepsy, ergot poisoning or delusional psychosis?Provide your interpretation why the girls exhibited their physically symptoms and accused others in the community of being witches. Did they appear bored and were looking for attention? Did they appear to be malevolent and vengeful in their accusations? Did they appear really to believe they were under the spell of witches? Did they appear to be acting out in a stressful or repressive environment? Or do you believe this is something unknowable and why? Provide your best support and insight to the position you decide to take incorporating if you like from Kathy Weiser’s brief biographies of the afflicted Salem Village girls. After reading the central ideas to Nik DeCosta-Klipa’s “mass conversion disorder” theory, do you believe this disorder may be a compelling reason to explain the afflicted girls’ behavior? Why or why not? Build your position by looking at the evidence and support DeCosta-Klipa provides or, if you choose, point out any flaws or shortcomings in his article. Here are your instructions and criteria for this Discussion Board:You must have two (2) separate posts. Each post is worth five (5) points each for a total of 10 points for Discussion Board #2.Provide insightful and well-reasoned support in your posts. Show serious reflection of thought. Each written post should be between 75-150 words. You may write more, but don't be excessive; don't write less than this word minimum; this word range should be enough to develop your ideas concisely.Remember don't copy and paste material from the internet. Your posts must be your own original writing.Keep in mind that you must post first before seeing other classmates' posts. To begin your post, point and click on Reply and a text box will appear. Then after you have reviewed what you written, then you can click Post Reply. Then you'll be able to read your classmates' posts.
