I may sound like a broken record, however communicating expectations clearly, concisely and holding self and others accountable. When managers fail to communicate instances of attendance, productivity, infighting, turn over begin increasing. Remember, communication is not only speaking but listening. Listening to employee concerns and issues then asking challenging questions develops employees engaging employees in desired behavior. This is more difficult than conveyed however when we lack communication and accountability skills employees lose sight on what good looks like. We use hour by hour production boards tracking daily efforts, a snap shot on productivity, if I do not check boards or follow up with employees who, first are performing at a high level, then helping those struggling then numbers become to represent nothing. However as I make rounds talking with employees, addressing concerns, asking about illnesses, family, the new car I am developing a report through communication. Lastly, we cannot forget to listen, listen, listen.
