Starbucks Corporation was founded in 1971 as a retailer of specialty coffee (Starbucks
Coffee Company, 2018). The company is headquartered in Seattle, Washington, in the United
States of America. Starbucks works in the food and beverage industry. In particular, Starbucks is
the largest coffeehouse organization in the world. Starbucks purchases and roasts high quality
and premium priced whole bean coffees before selling them. The company has a product mix
that includes a variety of coffee types, tea, fresh food items and other types of beverages
(Starbucks Coffee Company, 2018). The company also licenses its trademark through other
supply channels, particularly licensed retail stores. Starbucks is the largest coffee company in
terms of sales and market share. Precisely, Starbucks dominates the coffee industry with a
market share of over 36.7% followed by its closest competitor, Dunkin Brands, which enjoys a
market share of around 24.6% (Geereddy, 2012). Other close competitors of Starbucks in the
food service industry include McDonald’s, Burger King and Wendy’s.
Starbucks has established itself as the worlds most powerful and reputable brand in the
high quality coffee market by offering customers a unique experience (Schultz, 2012). The
company has particularly elevated the coffee experience to a higher level.

Starbucks was

particularly the first to revolutionize the coffee industry by offering consumers with expensive,
high quality coffee (Geereddy, 2012). Also by offering an excellent store environment,
Starbucks’ stores offer a strategic place where consumers can remove fatigue and escape daily
life chaos (Epstein, 2018). Starbucks consumers are mainly from the upper class or the upper
middle class. It targets people in need of a peaceful environment to drink coffee and reduce life
