Lynch (2014) stated that “the teachers who are interested in fostering a cultural awareness in their classroom should actively demonstrate to their students that the genuinely care about their cultural, emotional, and intellectual needs “(para. 1). Effective teachers need to foster an environment that is inclusive to all students and their learning styles and differences. Despite race, culture, gender, disability or economic status, all students deserve to be in an environment that is conductive to meeting their needs.

One way a teacher can manage a diverse classroom is to “express interest in the ethnic background of the students” (Lynch, 2014). Having a good understanding of students’ background and their cultural differences renders a culturally responsive classroom (Lynch, 2014). Students are more engaged and compliant when they know that teachers show an interest in them, not only as student, but also as a human being.

Because classrooms are full of learners from various backgrounds learners from various backgrounds and learning challenges, a teacher should make sure that the curriculum is “inclusive”, and that it reflects those represented in the classroom (Lynch, 2014). Managing a cultural diverse classroom requires a teacher to recognize that students should be able to make connections to the curriculum. Teachers should adjust/adapt their teaching to ensure that all learners are included and valued.

I remember feeling like an outcast in my 7th grade geography class. Being the only African American student in the class, my teacher was not very inviting nor did she engage in much of a conversation with me. Myself and another classmate got into a disagreement and she immediately tool the side of the other person. She did not even ask to hear my side of the story. This made me feel unwanted and devalued as a person. So today with diversity being on the rise, teachers must be sensitive to those who look different, talk different, and learn different.

Therefore, the last strategy to discuss, noted in our reading this week is for teachers to develop positive relationships with students. This strategy is essential to effective classroom management and has the ability to decrease behavior challenges (Jones & Jones, 2016). Jones and Jones (2016) referenced a study on African American students, and it stated that these students responded better to those teachers who demonstrated a caring nature towards them. They did not respond well to those teachers who displayed unfair treatment toward them. A lot like what I experienced with my 7th grade geography teacher because she did not show that she cared for me at all, which resulted in me not having trust in white teachers.

However, Jesus tells us in Matthews 5:44, But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven…
