Deadliest Earthquakes - ASSIGNMENT A

Forces within: plate tectonics, earthquakes

Please do the following

1. watch the PBS NOVA video "Deadliest Earthquakes" which can be viewed below.

2. answer the 3 questions below.

3. response to discussing earthquakes.

briefly answer the following questions:

1. How long is the San Andreas Fault in California and does it move relatively fast or slow?

2. Why are scientists drilling in the deserts of Southern California?

3. Why can earthquakes trigger other earthquakes, and where was this observed in 2010?

Please keep the above assignment and bottom assignment into its own DOCX/DOC. Thank You.

Earthquakes Discussion: ASSIGNMENT B

We live near the San Andrea's Fault, as well as many other smaller faults, so earthquakes are something most of us have experienced. Think about the earthquake we experienced just last week! Reflect on what you learned from the NOVA video Deadliest Earthquakes, and discuss what you think might happen if a large earthquake occurred in our area. If you have experienced an earthquake explain what that was like: what was the magnitude on the Richter scale? Where were you when it happened? How did it make you feel?

Instructor's example post:

I did not grow up in Southern California, so when I moved here after college I experienced earthquakes for the first time. The strongest earthquake I experienced was, I believe, a 6.5 on the Richter scale, near Hemet CA. I was camping in the mountains, and sleeping in a tent. The quake occurred early in the morning and I woke up hearing a dull roar, and then felt the earth rolling like I was on a boat on choppy water. It took me awhile to realize that it was an earthquake. I was not in any danger from collapsing buildings so I was not afraid. Rather it was an exciting experience! However, having seen the damage that can occur from severe earthquakes, I am more concerned now what would happen if a large quake hit our area. Would my two-story house collapse? Would I be able to get my children out? What if it happened when they were at school and I was at work? We are working on creating an earthquake kit to store in an easily accessible place: so far, we have put in bottled water, canned food, a backpacking stove and fuel, and a first aid kit. Can you think of anything else that would be important to include in an earthquake kit?

Thank You So Much!

San Andrea’s fault is a boundary that divides the western California plate and the Pacific plate.
San Andrea’s fault is a master fault that cuts through the major rocks of the California coastal
region. The fault is about 800 miles long and also extends to a depth of approximately 10 miles
within the earth. The fault is discovered to be moving very slowly in the earth’s surface over time.
