Technical Writing Definition & Analysis So, let’s get started with something that’s a bit more lowstakes, and that should help us set the tone for the semester— breaking down how you see technical writing, and getting acquainted with technical documents. For this project, I want you to find a technical document that is commonly used within your discipline, at home, or at work (any of those options is fine) and do the following in the form of a standard essay: ● Define technical writing in your own words. ● Explain the type of document you selected, and why. ● Discuss how this document fits into the definition that you provided for technical writing. ● Discuss what role audience and purpose play in the development of the technical document you selected. ● Present a series of questions or concerns you have about technical writing and/or the writing process for a technical communicator based on the document you selected. Guidelines: ● There is no word count (I’m interested more on quality and thoughtful use than quantity of words). ● You must participate in the course workshops via D2L. ● This Project is Due Tuesday, September 18th. Assessment Model: I will assess your work by considering and weighing the answers to the following questions: ● ● ● ● ● ● How well does this project define technical writing based on the writer’s perspective? Does this project present a suitable piece of technical writing, and how well does it explain how this document fits into the writer’s understanding of technical writing? How well does this project demonstrate an understanding of the audience and purpose of the technical document it presents? How well does this project interrogate technical writing and technical writing process based on the document the writer selected? Does this project illustrate mastery over fundamental elements of writing, such as structure/order of content, grammar, punctuation, word choice, and use of sources when/if applicable? What overall feedback might the writer consider, especially as it relates to revising this project or in future writing endeavors?
