Callahan provides various arguments for his stand on having a control on the increasing cost
of provision of life-extending interventions to the elderly. Dr. Callahan puts forward three
concerns relating to this case. The first concern is that a large portion of the healthcare is being
put forth for the elderly when compared to the benefits that the children are receiving. He
mentions that the federal government goes on to spend six times more money on the elderly
above 65, compared to that spent on those under 18 years. The presidential address from 1984
also covers this point of focusing more on the elderly as opposed to focusing more on those who
are within the child-bearing age. The second concern is that the elderly who are in their final year
