Who is Oliver Cromwell? Why was he important?
Oliver Cromwell is an English soldier born in Huntingdon England on April 25, 1599 and
died on September 3, 1658. He started life as an ordinary man that had no military training until
the English civil war begun. When the war broke, he was a father to five children. Within a
decade from the time war broke, Cromwell rose into the throne of Wales, Scotland, and England
with high power and authority. (History.com Editors, 2009) He was an outspoken Puritan who
led organized parliament armies in the English civil war, which broke out in 1642. His position
was deputy commander of the new model army which destroyed the royalist forces during the
battle of Naseby in 1645. He focused on building a pious army, which would conquer king
Charles' reign.
Between 1653 and d1658, Cromwell served as lord protector of England, Scotland,
Wales, and Ireland. He also served after King Charles 1 died, in the Rump Parliament where he
began to reform part of the legal system through the blue laws. During his term as a general on
the side of the parliament, Cromwell fought against King Charles 1 and helped to overthrow the
