Positivity Leads to Happiness After watching The Life Altering Power of a Positive Mind, I have a whole new perspective on the influence that a positive mindset can have. I think that Achor’s ideas are valid, reasonable, and backed up by solid evidence. He states that positivity and happiness are an individual choice, but we are always influencing others whenever we emit joy. Achor explains that mirror neurons in an individual are signaled by others and release dopamine. Dopamine then creates joy and happiness. His thoughts resonated with me and encouraged me to look at life from a holistic view. I now believe that a change in my attitude can help motivate me to achieve my potential. One of Achor’s concepts that I feel encouraged to try is journaling about a positive experience every day. This strategy will allow me to feel and experience joy in my life. Moreover, the ideas that Achor shares will assist in building more employee-friendly businesses. In specific, he mentions that human brains have been designed to wirelessly connect with others. Positivity spreads just as quickly as negativity. It is important that a work environment remains in a positive mindset throughout day-to-day tasks in order to be productive and optimistic. Fortune 500 companies seek him out in hopes that employees learn how to build and maintain a positive mindset. He gives great exercises to encourage confidence and explains how to measure prosperity. One activity recommended is to thank someone every time an individual pulls out their phone. This practice could also be advantageous through verbal communication in Fortune 500 companies because it could strengthen the relationships between employees. The best way to measure happiness in life and in a business is through social connection. If there are no genuine relations in an organization, it will not thrive and flourish to its full potential. In the article, “5 Science-Backed Ways to Be Happier at Work,” I learned that an individual is more likely to slack off at work if they are not happy there. I fully agree with that statistic because I have firsthand experienced dissatisfaction at work and feeling less motivated. The mentioned idea on happiness that most resonated with me was to bring personal baggage to work. Employees are advised not to come into work with other worries and issues. However, I believe that having a group at work who will help you through your “baggage” can be advantageous because of their outside perspective. I will integrate these ideas into my professional work by not being hesitant to share my feelings with my coworkers (when appropriate). Someone who does not fully know the situation at hand can offer unbiased advice. Additionally, I will remind myself of Shandrow’s third idea which was to take a breather and pause when life gets hectic. This tip will allow me to control my stress levels and feel more confident in my abilities. All in all, this article offered me great advice on how to be happier at work and I would love to be a Chief Happiness Officer as it seems like a rewarding job. Aleesa Sells 16 hours ago RE: Positivity Leads to Happiness Paige, great discussion board. I agree that employees slack off when they aren't happy. I've experienced this personally. Sometimes there would be days where I would drink a bunch of water just so I had an excuse to leave the office and go to the bathroom. It was miserable. Even on days when I would finish my work early I would go extra slow reading my emails or find a somewhat "work-related" article to read to waste time. A lot of this has to do with the culture of work and whether or not you have someone you enjoy being around. I cannot stress enough how miserable it will be to spend 8+ hours a day with people you could care less about. It makes it even worse when you are around negative people or you feel like the work you do doesn't matter. That overall hurts a business' morale, bottom line, and reputation. I think if people took more time to show appreciation and get to know one another at work, it could be a good time. I think it's very simple to do but other people have different priorities so it can be hard to get everyone on the same page.
