advantage. Growth has been accomplished through a cautiously orchestrated campaigns of macro
and micro policies, shop floor activities, and top management involvement (Garvin, 1988). In
1959, Xerox Corporation introduced Xerox 914, the first plain paper copier. The corporation
grew by employing a reliable and effective organizational model to market a technology ignored
by a majority of leading organizations (Chesbrough & Rosenbloom, 2002). Many people
perceived it as the most successful business product ever invented. During the 1960s, the
company grew, selling all it produced which enabled it to generate a revenue of $1 billion in
record-setting time. According to Lueck (1984), the copier became almost omnipresent in
American offices and changed workplace habits all over the world. Its competitive advantage in
the industry grew because of strong patents, minimal competition, and a growing market. In such
a business environment, the company's management was not pressed to concentrate on
consumers.
