Anne Bradstreet’s poem “The Prologue” is one of the poems that have been written to point
out the place of women and how they are treated in the society that does not recognize the principle
of gender equity. The author has clearly brought out the knowledge of how women are perceived
in a male dominated society, for instance they are perceived as being submissive. They are also
seen as objects of inferiority in this masculine society. There is a belief that there are tasks, chores
and duties that are often associated with women especially the traditional duties which cannot be
performed by men for example sowing.
The author also reveals to us that women in a patriarchal society do not have an opportunity
and freedom to express their ideas and also speak out their minds, this is because they have a belief
that women lack the ability to make sound and solid decisions. Furthermore, they are seen as
lacking the capacity of generating new and brilliant ideas that are of great help in terms of
development or prosperity to the society and in case of any, it could not be backed up in the society.
It is through her poems that Anne Bradstreet has focused on creating awareness and
