The Lusitania
The Lusitania was a British luxury passenger boat, that was sunk by the Germans mistakenly for a war vessel. It sank on May 7th, 1915 and 1,198 people were killed, 128 were Americans. This is significant because it challenged American neutrality, and moved the U.S. on the path of war.

17th Amendment
The 17th amendment to the constitution of the united states that was passed in 1913,
established widespread election of United States’ senators by the general public of the state. It
was substantial because it guaranteed that senators were elected and not appointed.
18th Amendment
The 18th amendment to the United States’ constitution approved in 1917 banned the
making and trade of intoxicating liquors but not the making for one’s own consumption. It was
important to the religious groups as they were advocating for an alcoholic free society.
Industrialization
This is the replacement of labor that was done by persons to be done by machines. It is of
major importance as it champions economic growth.
Urbanization
This is the movement of individuals from reserves to towns in pursuit of better living
environs. Urbanization is of significance as it leads to the growth of worldwide economy and
backs the developing level of industrialization.
1908 Muller v. Oregon case
Oregon endorsed a law that restricted women to grind for a maximum of 10 hours a day
in plants and industries. The proprietor of a laundry business Curt Muller was penalized 10$
when he violated the law. It was significant as women had to take care for their children.
Florence Kelley
An associate of the interuniversity society was an activist for women’s suffering and
African-American civil rights. She aided in the creation of new century guild of Philadelphia
which proposed to improve working conditions of the lower class in urban areas.

National Consumers League
This is an American foundation that was formed in 1899 to fight for the wellbeing of
employees and consumers who had little authority in the factory and the marketplace. It educated
the community on matters of working surroundings and earnings.
Schenk v. U.S case
This was the case in which the Supreme Court ruled that the liberty of speech protection
could be limited if the words are written or vocalized represented to the public posed a threat.
March 3rd: Zimmerman Telegram
This was a note decoded by British that was from Arthur Zimmerman, German’s foreign
secretary. It promised Mexico that it would help them recover New Mexico, Texas and Arizona
if they became German allies. It helped turned U.S public opinion against Germany.
Treaty of Portsmouth
Signed in the U.S steered the termination of the Russo-Japanese war. The overpowered
Russians acknowledged Japan as the prevailing power in Korea. It was significant to Japan as
some of the leases attained by Russia were restored to Japan.
Gentlemen’s Agreement
It was an informal treaty between Japan and USA. This meant that the United States
would not impose restrictions on Japanese immigration. Its significance was to reduce pressure
between the two countries.
WW1
Initiated in Europe and went on between 1914 and 1918. The European supremacies were
separated into two, the allies and the central powers. The war ultimately concluded with the
downfall of the central powers.

Assertive Diplomacy
Assertive diplomacy is a tactic to establish state power and posits the prestige motive
behind it.
Moral Diplomacy
Introduced by President Woodrow Wilson in 1912 is a system in which aid is given only
to nations whose ethical philosophies are aligned to that nation. It was important as it supports
the growth of national ideas.
Espionage Act
This was a federal law passed in the U.S in 1917 immediately after the United States
entered into the world war. It presented insubordination of the military and support of enemies
during wartime.
Sedition Act
It was an extension of the espionage act passed in 1918. It covered broader offenses
notably speech and opinion.
Theodore Roosevelt
He became the youngest president in the United States after replacing McKinley who had
been assassinated. He energetically led the Congress and public towards continuous reforms and
brought enthusiasm and authority to the presidency.
William Taft
He was elected as the 27th president of the United States between 1909 and 1913 and later
became Chief Justice a position he served until a month to his death. He was the only individual
to serve in both offices.

Reform Darwinism
It was a theory created by Professor Lester Frank that suggests that because human
beings are intelligent they can affect natural selection. It contrasted the idea of survival for the
fittest and urged the government to make as many people as possible fit to survive.
Socialist Party
Name of many political parties worldwide. All of these parties advocate for socialism.
Most of these parties advocate for social democracy or democratic socialism.
Industrial workers of the world
Famously known as Wobblies, was made in Chicago in the USA in 1905. It is an
international labor union that incorporates industrial unionism with general unionism,
Plessy v. Ferguson
This was a decision issued in the U.S Supreme Court in 1896. It advanced the
controversial separate but equal doctrine. This led to the separation of use of public facilities
between whites and colored people.
Triple Alliance
It was a secret arrangement between Italy, Germany, and Austria-Hungary. It was formed
on 20th May 1882 and expired during the World War 1.
Triple Entente
The Triple Entente was a treaty signed in 1907 between France, Great Britain, and
Russia to counter the risk posed by the Triple Alliance of Italy, Germany, and Austria-Hungary.
The settlement was later enhanced with alliances to Japan and Portugal.
Bolshevik
It was a division of the Democratic Party Marxist meaning one of the majority. They won
a main stream of key issues in the second congress party vote hence their name.

American Expeditionary Force
It was the name given to American troops who were serving in Europe during the First
World War. This troops took part in a major battle, the battle of Cantigny and won.
League of Nations
The League of Nations came into being after the end of World War One. The League of
Nation’s job was simple, it was to guarantee that warfare never broke out another time. Many
looked to the League to bring peace to the world.
Teapot Dome
The Teapot Dome Scandal of the 1920s surprised Americans by enlightening an
exceptional level of greed and bribery within the federal administration during Warren G
Harding’s term.
Five-Power Naval Treaty 1922
The Washington Naval Treaty was signed in 1922 among the countries that had won the
First World War. They settled on limiting naval construction which in turn would reduce an arms
race.
Welfare Capitalism
Welfare capitalism is the practice of companies providing welfare amenities to their
personnel. This policy believes that the private sector can offer social welfare programs more
efficiently compared to the central government.
Prohibition
It was a nationwide law that banned the importation, production, and sale of alcoholic
beverages in the period between 1920 and 1933. It aimed to end the alcoholism and family
violence that had risen as a result of alcoholic beverages.

New Negro
This is a term propagated throughout the Harlem Renaissance suggesting a further
outspoken support of dignity and a refusal to succumb silently to the regulations of Jim Crow. It
was made popular by Alaine Leroy
Ku Klux Klan
It was a clandestine hate group in the southern U.S that was vigorous for a number of
years after the civil war. It intended to subdue the afresh acquired privileges of colored people. It
was accountable for many unruly proceedings.
Reconstruction Finance Corporation
It was formed by President Herbert during the Great Depression of the early 1930s to
reestablish confidence in businesses.
Bonus Marcher
Bonus Army was an assembly of 15,000 World War 1 veterans who, with their families,
converged on Washington DC in 1932, demanding instant bonus compensation for wartime
services to ease the economic hardship of the Great Depression
Scottsboro Boys
The Scottsboro Boys were nine young black men, untruthfully indicted for raping two
white females on a train nearby Scottsboro, Alabama in the year 1931.
Social Gospel
The Social Gospel was a drive in North American Protestantism that applied Christian
ways to problems of the community such as racism, poverty, alcoholism, slums, crime and child
labor.

Settlement Homes
Settlement houses were important improvement establishments in the late 19th century,
and Chicago's Hull house was the best-known settlement in the United States. Most being
enormous structures in congested immigrant neighborhoods.
Jane Adams
She was the initiator of settlement houses and a peace activist. She was among the most
prominent social activists and helped America address topics concerning mothers.
