SOCW 6204 WU Social Worker Ethical Principles & Wellbeing of Clients Discussion
Respond to at least two different colleagues’ postings in one or more of the following ways: Review a colleague’s post and provide a constructive critique of the selected ethical standards and their importance. Comment and elaborate on the importance of the standards your colleague shared. Expand on your colleague’s post about applications of the standards in medical social work practice. USE REFERENCCES: DB 1 Michael When reading all of the Ethical principles that a social worker must adhere to, it is hard to choose 3 that I feel are most important. The 3 that I have chosen to cover are ones that in most of my classes we have covered, and I feel that a social worker deals with these standards with every client. The 3 that I chose are 1.01 commitment to clients, 1.04 competence and 1.05 culture awareness and social diversity (NASW, 2017). 1.01 Commitment to clients: This is the first standard of the NASW code of ethics. It states, “the social worker's primary responsibility to promote the well-being of clients” (NASW, 2017). I chose this because it covers the basic value of the social work practice which is to assist others who need assistance. Privacy and confidentiality are a part of 1.01 by making the client aware that the client’s best interest is primary, but I also have legal obligations to report about abuse, self-harm, and the intent to harm others. Example: An example would be that if I had a client that discussed the idea of hurting someone or himself, I would need to report this. 1.04 Competence: It states that “social workers should provide services and represent themselves as competent only within the boundaries of their education, training, licensing, certification, consultation received, supervised experience or other relevant professional experience” (NASW, 2017). This is very important in any profession and I am glad to see social work is no different. Providing a service that you are not up to date on or have no background in when assisting a client does not do anyone any good. By doing so you are going against many other ethical standards. Commitment to clients, self-determination, and cultural awareness, and social diversity are just a few examples (NASW, 2017). Example: An example would be that if I mostly work with clients who suffer from grief and loss and I have a client come in that has a drug and alcohol addiction and I have never worked with clients with addiction and do not have experience or credentials to work with this client I should refer them to another therapist. If I were to work with this client, it would not benefit either of us. 1.05 Cultural Awareness and Social Diversity: It states, “social workers should understand the culture and its function in human behavior and society, recognizing the strengths that exist in all cultures” (NASW, 2017). A social worker needs to be aware of a client's individual and societal cultures and spiritualities. This also requires a social worker to look at their own cultural background and identity. Knowing your own biases will assist in helping a client who has a different cultural background than your own. Cultural factors like race, gender, age, religion, and possible disabilities all need to be considered when working with a client. This overlaps with other ethical standards such as 1.04 Competence. Example:A social worker who does not fully understand the client and their beliefs, needs to be aware that this could interfere with interventions and does not support promoting the clients right to self-determination (NASW, 2017). If I have a client who does not speak English and is from a country, I am not familiar with, I could make things worse by not understanding the clients culture National Association of Social Workers. (NASW) (2017). Code of ethics. Retrieved from https://www.socialworkers.org/About/Ethics/Code-of-Ethics/Code-of-Ethics-English Db 2 Karlee “Social Workers' Ethical Responsibilities to Clients” (National Association of Social Workers (NASW)) is the first of the ethical standards that I find important, this talks about the commitment we have to our clients, doing what is necessary for them not for any other individual. I think that an example of this would be honoring patients' wishes when it comes to things such as DNR’s if the patient is ready and wants to pass away if it comes to that but the family does not want that for the patient. It is a social worker's responsibility to do what the patient wants over what the family wants. “Social Workers' Ethical Responsibilities to Colleagues” (National Association of Social Workers (NASW)) to me, this is a common-sense one that you treat people you work with, with respect and get the respect back. For example, if a social worker is working in an interdisciplinary group but does not agree with the treatment that is being said they should bring up the thoughts on the topic but not in a derogatory way, bring it up respectfully talk it out, and then come to a conclusion based on what is decided within the group. “Social Workers' Ethical Responsibilities in Practice Settings” (National Association of Social Workers (NASW)), to me this means that the social worker needs to be competent in what they are doing or saying, they need to be up to date on information and know what limitations they have when working with clients. For example, as a social worker, you should always want to learn more and get more information about the population you are serving if you are working for hospice try and find resources to help you learn more about the grieving process or things like that to make the patient's life easier.
