1. The HR Director is having lunch outside the office. She hears a competitor talking about a
significant change in their business that could affect the performance of her own firm.

What is HR’s ethical duty?
Even though the Directors mode of acquiring the information is unethical, he can still use the
information to enable his company to overcome competition from other companies. The
acquired information is in this case considered as intelligence since its acquired without the
consent of the competitor and is beneficial to the company. The HR Director, on the other hand,
is expected to perform the following ethical duties after acquiring the intelligence for him to be
of help to his company. First, the Director should identify the department which the intelligence
will be most helpful and where if the intelligence is applied, it will increase the competitive
advantage of his company. The Director should also determine if the department identified
above, has a skilled labor force which can utilize the intelligence received to mitigate the
external competition. Lastly, the Director should assess the skills and knowledge of the
employees from the identified department to ensure that they are experienced and can utilize the
information to increase competitiveness. These duties should, therefore, be promptly executed
and one after another to ensure that the wellbeing of the company achieved and that the
competitors don’t dominate.
