Odontogenesis
Odontogenesis is the elaborate process by which the teeth grow from their natal
stage to the mature crowned tooth in the mouth. For the effective functioning of the tooth
in adulthood, every stage involved in the development process must be undertaken. This
paper examines in detail the five stages of tooth development and how each one of them
is important to the formation of the fully grown and developed tooth.
Initiation Stage
In a nutshell, this stage of tooth development is the first and is characterized by
the rise of oral epithelium and dental lamina. The mouth of the embryo at this stage is
covered by ectoderm and the typical occurrence is during the 6th week of development
(Theocharidou et al., 2017). This is important due to the fact that the exterior of the
ectoderm is fundamental in the precipitation of the oral epithelium which contains
various groups of tissue that take the form of a horseshoe. The oral epithelium then
proceeds to pave way for the development of the dental lamina. This happens in the
seventh week and the stage is finalized when the neural crest cells and the mesenchyme
