Corporal Punishment and Its Application in US Schools
The question of corporal punishment is one that has been ongoing for a long time, and
one of the major issues which does not seem as if it will go away in a long time. In the US,
nineteen states allow the use of corporal punishment in their schools. It is both an emotive and
controversial topic in the US, and beyond. In most cases, the arguments either for or against the
corporal punishment has mainly revolved on the practicalities, the effectiveness of such methods
and the ethical implications. In the US, there is the argument that all states allow ‘reasonable’
corporal punishment to be applied in homes, and this implies, there is a need to have a paradigm
shift, and to try and balance the two sides, to give a fair accordance to the arguments extended.
One of the major issues that needs to be understood is the common argument that pain
which is inflicted is intended to serve both as a punishment and a deterrent to any future crimes.
