Chapter 1: Forensic pathology
Forensic scientists are incredibly vital in the processes of crime investigation and
upholding justice. They specialize in securing and analyzing evidence. The discipline of forensic
science is organized into many fields, among them forensic pathology. A forensic pathologist
may work in a coroner's or a medical examiner's office.
Forensic science involves the determination of the cause or manner of a variety of types
of death. Primarily, forensic science investigates sudden, suspicious, or unnatural deaths – this is
why this profession is considered forensic as its application informs legal proceedings (Houck,
2016). When faced with a case of death, forensic science first sets out to uncover history about
said death and how it might have occurred. The next step often involves trying to gain
information on the deceased medical history.
Once the forensic pathologist acquires that information mentioned above, they perform
an autopsy which involves the internal and external examination of the body. This also consists
of the collection of biological specimens which are sent off to get tested for alcohol, drugs,
poisons, disease or any other thing which could aid in the determination of the cause of death.
Upon receiving results from the tests, forensic pathology correlates that information and tries to
find if the findings could help determine the cause and manner of death. A forensic pathologist
may also be expected to be called by subpoena to a legal proceeding such as a court proceeding
to explain the findings and how they informed the conclusions made (Houck, 2016).
