FRIEDMAN ON GLOBALIZATION

The question addresses the concept of globalization something that has dramatically
transformed the world from the views of Thomas Friedman. Globalization is an unstoppable
integration of markets, communication systems, and transportation systems to the extent that has
never been experienced ever before. The question, therefore, attempts to evaluate what the
Thomas Friedman view as the flatness of the world due to advancement in technology and
internet accessibility (Friedman, 2005). Globalization has indeed transformed every aspect of life
including business, government, and society in general. With continuous improvement in
technology, the world continues to become a global village where there is a lot of integration that
has been created through a more facilitated interaction of people from all corners of the world.
There is a lot of convergence in the world activities due to the advancement in technology most
specifically with the introduction of the internet. The flatness that Friedman talks about relate to
the concept of interaction of people that has indeed been facilitated through technological
innovations (Friedman, 2005). Today, there is an intensive global collaboration of people in
which people can trade with one another regardless of their global location.
The globalization system that drives every aspect of activities in the view of Friedman is
the aspect of the integration of economies. The world has become an increasingly interconnected
place whereby people can interact and collaborate in doing business regardless of their location
in the world. With the increased integration of economies as a result of globalization, whether it
is a company or a country, the threats and opportunities are increasingly derived from both local
and international integration (Friedman, 2005). A fall or a rise in the global oil prices, for
example, would affect all global economies as a result of this high integration. In other words,
the more the world is integrated, the more risks and opportunities. Therefore, in my
understanding, the world has become flatter as a result of increased globalization where there is

no barrier in the integration and collaboration of the world economies as a result of the
technological innovations such as the internet.
I think this question is relevant since what Friedman viewed as a flat is experienced in the
world today. Globalization has impacted every aspect of life and business. Through
globalization, trade between world economies has been enhanced as many world economies can
trade through open markets with other world economies in real time. Through the i...
