Role of Education in Addressing Violence against Women
The topic on gender equality may have long been addressed with finality from a scholarly
perspective, but much remains undone in advancing the female agenda. Recent politics in the
American society surrounding the confirmation of Judge Brett Kavanaugh has been stalled by an
alleged case of sex violence against women (Gabbat, 2018). On the other hand, American and
world television icon Bill Cosby just received a three to ten year sentence for his misconduct,
also involving violence against women (Croft, Levenson, & Cooper, 2018). The primary
similarity in addition to the two cases involving violence against women is that they happened in
situations that one would not expect the perpetrators to have engaged in such activities. It raises
the question on whether education and the experienced success from academic resource
endowment among women is a contributory factor towards successful eradication of violence
against women.
To many an audience, education is a tool of empowerment, one that gives the individuals
the opportunity to be independent enough and make different decisions. According to Roy
(2015), education among women would make them more knowledgeable of their rights and
respond appropriately to issues arising in their access to proper treatment. However, the extent to
which women escape male hegemony even in light of education remains less understood. It is
through understanding such issues that the contemporary society could develop an understanding
on the implications of male hegemony over women, and the sources of cases of violence against
the women. While much attention has been focused on cultural issues affecting violence against
women, education often includes westernization, and women that have gained education should
not be as susceptible to gender-based violence (Ellsberg et al., 2015). Therefore, a research on
the extent on the issue based on female accounts is essential to understand the problem.

Research Background
From a feminist theory’s perspective, cases involving violence against women tend to be
higher in countries where their status is relatively low, compared to where their status is higher
(Yodanis, 2004). Therefore, one is likely to observe higher than normal rates of violence in a
society in which women are not as independent than in cases in which women have access to
basic rights, and possess a voice to participate on public issues. However, to access such
positions, and based on the capitalist nature of the contemporary society, education would be a
key factor (Roy, 2015). Hence, based on the statistics from the feminist approach and the
arguments on the necessity of education in achieving social success, it remains clear that
societies with lowest cases of gender-based viol...
