Name: This is a part of 10% semester grade on reading and online assignments. The trade fight between the United States and China intensified as the two economic superpowers hit each other with their biggest round of tariffs yet (CNN, September 24, 2018). The Trump administration imposed new 10% tariffs on $200 billion of Chinese goods (in addition to the tariffs already imposed on $50 billion of Chinese goods). China retaliated immediately with new tariffs on $60 billion of U.S. goods. The Trump administration used the Section 301 to punish China for alleged violations of American intellectual property. Section 301 of the U.S. Trade Act of 1974 authorizes the President to take all appropriate action, including retaliation, to obtain the removal of any act, policy, or practice of a foreign government that violates an international trade agreement or is unjustified, unreasonable, or discriminatory, and that burdens or restricts U.S. commerce. Section 301 cases can be self-initiated by the United States Trade Representative (USTR) or as the result of a petition filed by a firm or industry group. To better understand political debate on China and trade, please study how American firms penetrate to Chinese markets. Please pick an American multinational corporation (e.g., Apple, Boeing, Google, and Nike) and study how the firm has operated in China. Just briefly summarize anything you find: (1) some financial information (e.g., market share in China; sales growth in China; and exports/imports to/from China) and (2) some interesting stories related to its market access to China (e.g., Chinese government restrictions, competition with Chinese firms; outsourcing to Chinese firms). There are many interesting stories. For example, survey how Alibaba compete American corporations in Chinese e-commerce market and how Google left China in 2010. Some American firms (e.g., Apple and Nike) are using many Chinese workers in their production processes. Chinese airlines are important customers for Boeing.
