Running head: CLIMATE CHANGE 1 Global Warming Student Name Institution CLIMATE CHANGE 2 Global Warming Global warming has been attributed to the earth's changing atmospheric conditions. There are opposing views on global warming with some factions terming it a hoax, while the other parties advocate for better and more environmentally-safe ways of going about various activities to mitigate the effects of global warming. These two groups, the Union for Concerned Scientists and the Americans for Prosperity that hold differing views on the topic. The Union of Concerned Scientists advocates for the sensitization of the masses on the effects of global warming, the science, and the ways to control global warming. The Americans for Prosperity are a conservative party and are of the view that reduced carbon emissions would reduce the economic prosperity. The Americans for Prosperity has openly opposed moves to mitigate global warming such as the President Obama global warming regulations. However, both parties are concerned with the overall well-being of the American society and both can work together to mobilize stakeholders, policies, and drive the reduction of greenhouse emissions agenda. The Union of Concerned Scientists has dedicated part of its agenda to educating and researching on global warming. The earth has been getting warmer every year for the past 40 years (Union of Concerned Scientists, 2018). This is attributed to the release of greenhouse gases that are generated by burning fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and natural gas. These are generated when powering vehicles, generating electricity, and heating homes among other activities. This has adverse consequences on the planet such as flooding due to heavy rains and rising sea levels, extreme heat waves, and severe droughts (Trenberth, 2013). The Americans for Prosperity is a conservative political party. The organization is aimed at recruiting, educating, and mobilizing US citizens to support policies and goals that make America free and help the less fortunate achieve their dreams (Americans for Prosperity, 2018). CLIMATE CHANGE 3 The party aims at achieving this by championing policies for economic freedom, education, and building a culture geared towards economic freedom. Some of the projects that the party is involved in include the advocacy for the better use of economic resources. This includes monitoring the government spending on energy projects that are quite costly. This has led them to be widely opposed to climate change issues (Riley, 2016). The Americans for Prosperity and the Union of Concerned Scientists have several factors that they share. To begin with, both the groups use the same mechanisms to get their message across to their supporters. For example, the Union of Concerned Scientists uses education through its website to sensitize the masses on global warming among other issues. Americans for Prosperity use their website to engage people in conversation as well as post articles concerning their activities. The two groups also are heavily invested in research by conducting own research and partnering with other research partners. The Union of Concerned Scientists and the Americans for Prosperity also have an understanding of global warming and climate change. The two groups know that climate change is real and it is happening but one group, the Union of Concerned Scientists, is more vocal in supporting anti-climate change policies. Additionally, the two groups are involved in the formulation of various national policies by engaging in research and lobbying activities. Both groups have the vision to build a better world in their various capacities. The Union of Concerned Scientists aims at achieving this through science while the Americans for Prosperity aim to achieve this through empowering economic prosperity. With dialogue and good team building mediators, the two parties can come together under a compromise to deliver a workable union that will enable each organization to meet its end goal efficiently. The two organizations have similar visions that involve the people enjoying CLIMATE CHANGE 4 a better future. The Americans for Prosperity are good at politics and use politics as a means to achieving their goals. Their main concern is the economic empowerment and freedom of the society. As such, the end compromise has to deliver economic freedom to the people. There are many opportunities in climate change that can deliver opportunities for economic empowerment. The Union of Concerned Scientists aims at ensuring that the effects of global warming and climate change are mitigated by the implementation of environmentally friendly policies. The end compromise for these two groups is the formulation of activities that generate economic sense while at the same time generating economic freedom. The objective of this solution is to deliver a safe environment to the people through engagement in green business. This means the wind power has to be commercialized and bringing business sense into other green projects that will generate income for many people. By undertaking such a compromise, both parties will be in a win-win situation. This solution requires that both parties have concrete gains. The Americans for Prosperity want the people to be empowered economically and with global warming, farmers are affected by lower growing seasons. This gives the farmers have a unique opportunity to move to higher value crops such as soybeans (Rubin, 2017). This will improve their income. Additionally, practices such as agroforestry will help to create microclimates that will enable farmers to get more produce and also mitigate the effects of climate change. The trees will help absorb more carbon dioxide which will mitigate global warming. Global warming is caused by the generation of carbon dioxide as a result of burning fossil fuels such as petrol and diesel. There is an opportunity to generate more power by combining fossil fuels and green energy such as wind power and electricity. This is through the hybrid engines. This will lower the cost of production, therefore, increase profits and also help to CLIMATE CHANGE 5 lower the amount of carbon dioxide in the environment. This is all possible through good research, policies and proper stakeholder partnerships. The two organizations can deliver this by Union of Concerned Scientists delivering the research and bringing on-board green investors and stakeholders while the Americans for Prosperity can help formulate policies and bring on board investors and stakeholders for implementation. In conclusion, global warming is the steady increase in the global atmospheric temperatures that is caused by the emission of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases as a result of burning fossil fuels. This is a topic that has been under heavy research and has solicited varying emotions, opinions, and support. The Union of Concerned Scientists supports anti-global warming campaign whereas the Americans for Prosperity are slow to support the cause as it may lead to reduced economic freedom which is their main area of concern. With the right forum and leadership, a compromise between the two groups can lead to new policy formulations that can create new innovations that will lead to improved livelihoods and economic stability. This compromise means that solutions for anti-global warming have to be commercialized and lead to little disruption while safeguarding the economic prosperity of the people. Reference About. (n.d.). You will answer guiding questions to help you think critically about the visual and rhetorical strategies a particular organization (stakeholder) implements in its campaign. Skills & Strategies This Part 1 Assignment will help you to • • • • identify a stakeholder who has an active website and who has an invested interest in the controversial issue you researched in Project 1 determine a stakeholder’s goals that encompass its interests, missions, and message analyze the stakeholder’s use of two images as argument make connections between the stakeholder’s goals and the visual campaign Description Begin by selecting an organization (stakeholder) that is engaged in the controversial issue you researched in Project 1. Explore the stakeholder’s goals that encompass its interests, missions, and message. Find two specific images created by the stakeholder. The stakeholder you identify may present these images via advertisements, Public Service Announcements, flyers, billboards, or on its website. Images may be static (still) or dynamic (literal movement) or a combination of both. If you choose a dynamic image, you must be able to take a clear screen shot of the image. Start thinking about how the organization’s two images might reflect its goals and argument. Respond to the following critical examination questions. Note: these questions map onto your course rubric to guide your assessment of this visual analysis. Upload your list of answers as a worksheet to MyReviewers by the due date. Questions 1. Choose one stakeholder from Project 1 as your focus for Project 2 and locate two of the stakeholder’s images (either static or dynamic), which represent the stakeholder’s goals. Include a description of the images. 2. Look at both of your images and consider their rhetorical situation. What are their purposes or goals, how are the images conveying and supporting these purposes or goals, and what audiences are the images trying to reach with their messages? Please include specific details about both images that help you answer the questions. 3. Reflect on how your images are created to convey the stakeholder’s goal. How do the visual design principles of the image, including the colors, text, and pictures (and whatever other design principles you recognize), work together to persuade the audience to agree with the stakeholder’s message? 4. Think about your images in terms of ethos, pathos, logos, and kairos. Identify elements of each rhetorical appeal in both of your images. Rhetorical Appeal Appeal to Logos: How does the stakeholder use reason and logic in the image to appeal to its audience? Point to specific details. Appeal to Pathos: What ways does the stakeholder appeal to its audience’s emotion through the image? Point to specific details. Appeal to Ethos: How does the stakeholder use credibility, reputation, and/or morality appeals in the image to persuade its audience? Point to specific details. Appeal to Kairos: In what ways might the stakeholder use an appeal to timeliness to influence its audience? Point to specific details. Image 1 Image 2 1. Using the information, you have accumulated so far, explain how the two images you have chosen support the goals of the stakeholder organization. Your answer should be at least 200 words. 2. Take a screen shot of your two images and paste your two images here. Helpful Hints Choose a stakeholder that has an active website to ensure that the organization you choose is substantial enough for you to research and provide information in your subsequent assignments and projects throughout the semester. Keep your focus on the relationship between the two images and the stakeholder’s main argument, including how the two images represent the stakeholder’s goals that encompass its interests, missions, and message.
