The contemporary environment is one that has seen an increase in the number of private
companies in existence and these companies have been critical in the deliverance of goods and
services in a better manner as compared to how the government carries out the same activities.
One of the vast industries is that of Aluminum and steel. China is a country that has numerous
factories that engage in the production of these and given the fact that the production is made on
a large scale, it has a surplus for export and one of the loyal clients to these products is the
United States. Despite the fact that the United States has the technology required to manufacture
these metals, it still acquires them from China through government strategies. Since these
commodities get into the country through the government, it is essential to note that tariffs are
imposed in such a manner that the cost of finally having these commodities in the company
increases. Going through the absolute and comparative advantage present in this industry and
looking at how free enterprise would be better suited to overlook transactions in this industry
ensures that there is an understanding of the healths that can take place and advantages of
engaging in this.

The theory of absolute advantage is appropriate with regard to this case and seeks to
show the advantages that privatization would bring to the Aluminum and Steel industry. A
background of the concept has one comprehending that Adam Smith was the initiator of the
theory and thus introduced Adam’s Theory of Absolute Advantage. Smith based the foundation
of this theory on an international trade where he sought to have people and institutions convinced
that international trade is a rather fair action. Reason for this is that when a country produces
and exports a particular commodity, there is another country that seeks to import the commodity
owing to the inability to produce the commodity and if it has the ability, it lacks the ability to
produce satisfactory volumes of the commodities. In the same measure, the country that imports
have the advantage of having the ability to produce a commodity that the other country lacks the
ability to.
According to the theory of absolute advantage, it is impossible for all countries to
become rich at the same time and this is because it is a process that requires a nation to pull
resources together in order to achieve the goals set and raise the Gross Domestic Product of the
country. It is impossible to achieve this through mercantilism also because there cannot exist a
situation where one country only exports commodities and fails to import.
Smith argued that the intervention of the government in trade is a setback to economic
development to both countries engaged in the trade and this is because the exporting country
does not reach its full exporting potential because many people in the importing country fail to
purchase the commodities owing to the high incentives set by the importing country’s
government.).As in this case, China has a surplus of Aluminum and Steel and this is because the
United States government imposes a high rate of taxation by huge tariffs imposed on the

commodities. Since the United States people do not purchase the commodities in bulk as
expected due to taxation, China has a surplus of the Aluminum and steel. China on the other
hand also gets to set high tariffs for commodities that they import from the United States and this
creates a rather volatile business environment.
If trade was free without the involvement of the government, then it would be possible
for China to export all the Aluminum and Steel that it places in the market because the United
States is one of the most active importers of Chinese commodities it is just that the tariffs make it
hard for commoners to purchase these commodities. Both of the countries would succeed and the
reason for this is that the Americans would be satisfied by getting all the commodities that they
require and on the other hand business people in China would benefit by boosting the sale of
their commodities and consequently increase the gross domestic rate of the country.
It is also essential to look at this through the effect of the tariffs on the net gain. They do
not believe that tariffs result in net gain and this is because the tariffs affect the government and
the people in the same measure. It is common knowledge that through the tariffs, the government
gets to make money that it uses to fund various projects. However, from an individual or a
business person’s perspective, it is notable that the tariffs do not bring net gain and given that the
individual companies are the backbone of any successful economy then it is essential to note that
their effects are generally poor.
In the American economy, Aluminum and Steel are important and this is because most of
the blue collar jobs involve the use of these metals and given the high tariffs imposed by the
government when importing them, it makes it rather difficult for people to purchase them.
Failure to purchase these vital commodities leads to the lagging of the businesses that are

involved with the metals and the general and eventual outcome of this is rather detrimental.
Many companies get to halt because of the lack of these vital components and the consequent of
this is having the people involved not making as much money as they ought to. With less
generation of income, then it is impossible for these people to contribute to the net worth of the
country and thus it does not reach its full potential. The amount of tariffs charged when entering
the country is very small and does not contribute to the economy as compared to the amount of
money that business people would make in case they carried out trade freely.
It is such information that seeks to show the importance of turning over some industries
to the private sector and having the government not involving itself in the activities of this
industry. The government ought to look further than the immediate money that it generates when
the goods are getting into the country. Other than this, the government should seek to calculate
the amount of money that it would generate eventually if it allowed free trade. Moreover, other
positive effects would come from the free trade and this is because there would be the creation of
job opportunities for pe...
