Assessment is a critical activity of social work practice, and it should be a flexible
process which is capable of responding to the diverse, dynamic factors of the service users.
There are several principles that guide and direct social workers on how to carry out assessments.
In the social work practice, a lot of emphasize has been put on the strength of the client (Cowger,
1994). Assessing the strength of a client is vital as it directs social workers on how best to handle
the client. Strength is what the entire client and the social worker needs to work with during the
contract period. In this case of Paula, there are several areas of strength. First Paula was brilliant
and intelligent (Cowger, 1994). She had finished her high education and even advanced to the
college level. The fact that she had primary, secondary and tertiary education made her
knowledgeable and had a high level of understanding. She also has a talent and passion for art
something which she can do to earn a living (Plummer, Makris & Brocksen, 2014). She
understands the journey of her life, and this has been documented in the several drawings which
she stocks in her house.

Another strength which Paula has is that she is able to attract and rally people around her.
Even though she would resist help from the professionals; nurses, doctors and social workers still
were determined to help her....
