The Churchill Falls power is the largest underground powerhouse in the world divided
into two sections the upper and lower. It was named Churchill Falls Power later in 1965, in
memory of Winston Churchill, the former British Prime minister. Originally, Churchill Falls
was referred to as Grand River. The falls originate from Ashuanipi Lake and drops in Lake
Melville. Churchill Falls drops five hundred and twenty-eight (528) meters or rather one
thousand seven hundred and thirty-five (1735) feet. John MacLean became the first white man to
visit the Churchill River and waterfall in 1839. As a result of the visit, John MacLean gave the
river another name, Hamilton River. The name Hamilton River was inspired by the name of the
Governor of Newfoundland Sir Charles Hamilton. Hamilton held the governor’s office from
1818 to 1825 (Feehan, 2011).
