UNITE HERE is a union in both Canada and the United States that is made up of over
265, 000 members who are active, these members work in the food service, hotel, casino
gaming, warehouse, and laundry industries. In 1891, HERE (Hotel Employees and Restaurant
Employees Union) was formed to represent hospitality industry workers in the United States.
In 2004, UNITE HERE was formed as a result of HERE merging with UNITE (Union of
Needle traders, Industrial, and Textile Employees). In the year 2005, together with other
unions such as the UFCW, Teamsters and Service Employees International Union (SEIU),
UNITE HERE joined the Change to Win Federation and withdrew from AFL-CIO (American
Federation of Labour and Congress of Industrial Organizations) (US Department of Labour,
2015). In May 2009, Bruce Raynor, the president of the union left the union together with
several other local unions and over 105, 000 members, most of these members were garment
