This chapter delineated some specific problems indicative of a true heaith crisis and described some solutions and strategies that could potentially have a positive impact. The main take-away point from this chapter mental illnesses need to be addressed by a community of concerned and committed is that the health problems and dramatically reduced life expectancies of persons with stakeholders, including PsyR practitioners and other mental health professionals, med- advocacy organizations. The community can continue to be overwhelmed by the mag- ical professionals, families, researchers, state- and national-level policy makers, and nitude of this predicament and even seek to ignore it, or they can choose to collectively collaborate on a future course that promotes healthy outcomes and longer lives. The Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS) has set a clear target for this community: within 10 years, eliminate 10 years of the 25-year disparity in lifespan (Manderscheid & The kinds of tragedies described in this chapter are potentially avoidable. Disorders conditions are living normal life spans because they have the treatment and resources to manage them. They get care and, in many cases, are self-managing these disorders with professional support. Many of the lifestyle factors contributing to the ill health of persons with or without psychiatric disorders are modifiable . For example , nicotine dependence is a terrible addiction, yet many persons with serious mental illness—like people in the general population-can reduce or eliminate their smoking, thereby increasing their average life expectancy. Similarly, people with mental illness can also modify their diets, increase their exercise, and manage their weight. Do they have partial success, outright failure, or relapses in these areas? The answer is yes, just as it is for everyone else struggling with these issues. Yet, also like others, persons with SMI are capable of making these positive changes. Providers, professionals, and paraprofessionals alike can no longer say, "It is not my job to help these people; they have a medical condition, and I am only a mental health worker.” Practices must be informed by the fact that physical and mental health conditions impact other dimensions of wellness (emotional, social, mental, intellectual, etc.). Providers should understand how health risk factors impede rehabil- itation goals and how health promotion models can foster a wellness lifestyle. People with serious mental illness have the capacity to learn and to grow in their ability to promote their health and maintain their wellness. 208 PSYCHIATRIC REHABILITATION Class Exercises people have as . a dietitian or nutritionist. a primary care physician. 1.
