U.S participation in the war in Cuba was actually inevitable. Even though the US had
wanted to remain neutral, the "unscrupulous newspapers" famously "yellow press" kept the war
before the America public, and by focusing on Spanish plights, the "yellow press" made it
untenable for Americans to remain a neutral party (Quiroga, 2014). In a written letter by the
Spanish ambassador to the U.S to José Canalejas, Madrid newspaper, the ambassador in part of
the letter says "weak and catering to the rabble, and, besides, a low politician, who desires to
leave a door open to me and to stand well with the jingoes of his party." In this instance, the
Spanish showed no interest in culminating the war.
