There are different types of workers in every company some who work hard and excel
and some who take shortcuts. To be able to know which workers have surpassed in their conduct
a performance appraisal method is needed. There are many types of performance appraisal
methods each with their own set of pros and cons. Therefore, the best appraisal methods ought to
be found to be able to offer compensation to the deserving worker in a just and amicable way.
According to the C.E.O. of the Marcus Buckingham Company, Jason Averbook, the
performance appraisal was first established when labor union contracts needed reviews every
year to provide raises on merit (Christiansen, 2015). The mentioned company works with
institutions to reassess the annual performance review systems. There was a need to establish a
system to evaluate the performance of employees based on specific, definable parameters and
hence determine a standard method of determining which employee has earned enough merit to
warrant raises. This was done to avoid cases where raises are given based on bias and favoritism.
However in our modern first paced world which is complex and dynamic consisting of
multiple layers and facets the process of annual reviews proved to be too sluggish. New
techniques became necessary to keep track of the performance of the employees on a real-time
