Many colleges have initiated projects and plans that aim at reducing “carbon footprint” on the campus. These projects are on various stages of implementation and achieve different results.

The concentrationCO2 in the air is now more than the level needed to maintain global warming
below 2 °C, which is expected cause a widespread impact on human life (EIA). (2009). The US
higher education sector is responsible for a large portion of the country's total emissions and
therefore plays a key role not only in reducing these emissions but also in other sectors and as a
model (Tao Gao et.al., 2014).
Goal and Achievements of the Harvard University Carbon Footprint Reduction Plan
In 2008, Harvard's short-term goal was to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 30% by
2016, especially for greenhouse gas emissions. Changes in energy supply and demand, including
de-carbonization of regional electric grids, have resulted in an absolute reduction in emissions by
24%. Despite purchasing more space, purchased electricity from domestic renewable firms
covered the residual six percent needed to achieve this goal. Excluding campus growth,
emissions in Harvard Universities have been reduced by 40% (Harvard University (n.d).
