History of the Armenian genocide
The Armenian genocide is also referred to as the Armenian holocaust. It took place in
between 1995 to 1918. This was during the World War 1. The Armenian genocide was the mass
killing of Armenian’s by the Turkish government. There was also mass deportation of Armenian
people. Armenians were Christians living in Anatolia which currently is Eastern turkey. The
Armenian independence ended when the Turkic speaking people migrated. The area was then
inhabited by Ottoman Turks who where Muslims. The empires ruler allowed the minority groups
including the Armenian’s to maintain their practices (Banean, 2015).
With time the Armenian people being a minority group were treated harshly. Those who
were living with the nomad communities became poor since the communities grabbed their
property and they lost their cases in the Muslim courts. The wealthy traders where suspected to
betray the Ottoman Empire. Some Armenian activists formed revolutionary parties. This caused
fear in the Ottoman Empire and resulted into several violent activities. Later on in 1908 some of
the young ottoman revolutionist formed the Young Turk, they were in favor of the Armenian’s
but it did not last long (Akçam & Akðcam 2012).
The Armenian genocide
When the World War 1 begun the Turk’s where fighting the German and AustroHungarian Empires. The Turk’s declared war on Christians apart from those who they were
friends with. The Armenian’s formed groups which supported the Turk’s armies. The Turk’s
thought the Armenians may turn on them when they won the war, they therefore removed the
Armenian battalions from fighting. In April 24th, 1915 the Turkish government arrested
Armenian intellectuals who were executed. Armenian people were forced out of their homes.

with food and water. They walked till dropped dead. The Turkish formed battalions which
drowned Armenian’s in rivers and threw them off cliffs. They also crucified and burned them
while alive. Some of the Armenian children were kidnapped and converted to Muslims. They
allocated the children to Turkish families. Women were raped and forced to wear harems. Some
women were made slaves. Some of the Turkish physicians administered poison and over dosed
drugs to kill Armenian’s. Due to the massacres a Turkish official suggested deporting
Armenian’s into other provinces. This deportation were genocidal. The properties belonging to
the dead or deported Armenian’s was occupied by Muslim families. The genocide ended in 1922,
around two million Armenians had been killed (Ihrig, 2016).
