The CDC reports that from 1999 to 2015, more than 183,000 people died in the U.S. from overdose related to prescription opioids.
The CDC has been researching the impact of opioid overdose to protect the public’s health and prevent opioid overdose deaths using surveillance and research. Guidelines of an opioid to physicians
Physicians need the guidelines of opioid as a way of ensuring the patients are
accessing chronic treatment that is effective and safe, as while as means of reducing overdose
of the related drugs through abuse and misuse by people. Hence, the following are the
guidelines that guiding the physician on opioid: first, opioid drugs should be used when the
benefits expected are outweighing the risks posed to the patient. Additionally, opioid has to
be used in combination with nonopioid pharmacologic therapy and nonpharmacological
therapy to place the patient at a safer position (World, Health 65)
