Punishment within the U.S Corrections System
Punishment is the act of inflicting an unpleasant experience on the offender, so they pay
for the wrongs they have committed. In the past, a punishment was seen as a way of isolating the
offender from the community since they were seen as bad luck to the society. The main role was
for retribution. However, things have changed, and the role of punishment has changed. There
are numerous objectives whereby the Federal and the state government wants to see people
change and become better and still pay for the wrongs they did. The objectives include;
deterrence, retribution, incapacitation, reparation, and lastly rehabilitation. All the above
objectives are geared towards changing the behaviors of the offender as compared to punishing
them. The paper will analyze the above objectives in detail and also give my view on the same.
Deterrence
Deterrence is the act of discouraging an action through the process of instilling fear in a
person or punishing another offender for others to learn from them. The federal and the state are
keen on ensuring the wrong behaviors are not repeated. Deterrence involves punishing another
