Although emotional hijacking is more likely to occur in virtual team settings, it can be
managed through matching the technology to the task at hand, communicating the intention of
information shared, maintaining regular communication, staying in sync with teammates, being
responsive and supportive, and being open and inclusive to feedback received. Communication is
a key element within team settings in both education and the work environment. The form of
communication avenue used may create spaces for conflict within the space. Emotional hijacking
refers to the state when a person’s cognition of a situation is overpowered by his or her emotions
relating to the same situation. This often leads to fearfulness as a reaction to the incident or
aggression over a matter relating to the same. Emotional hijacking is likely to occur within
virtual team project settings since the avenue used for communication hinders display of emotion
from the sender and receiver of the information. Therefore, it is often for conflict to arise as well
as distrust among teams who experience emotional hijacking and more so if it not handled
appropriately. However, emotional hijacking can be managed, and this would lead to creation of
an environment where people feel fulfilled in working in virtual teams due to structures put in
place. This paper will use Bailey’s article ‘How to beat the five killers of virtual working’ which
addresses problems experienced when working in virtual platforms.
Matching the technology to the task manages emotional hijacking as this ensures that the
information is shared through the right avenue. There exist several forms of communication
including e- mail, chat platforms, web conferencing, and videoconferencing which are used for
