Description of the client

This is a review of a counseling session that was conducted with a male client. The client
who has been given the pseudo name, Andre has just realized that he is going to be a father. At
the age of 33, Andre had just began his journey to settle in life since currently he is living with
his friends but had planned to move to Key West where he has found a job. However, he has
now found himself in a situation where he only has two months to prepare for the coming baby
and instead of moving to his new job, he is forced to remain in New Hampshire to care for the
baby with his ex-girlfriend with who does not want anything to do with him except raisin the
baby. This scenario has greatly affected Andre who is under extreme stress and constant panic
attacks. During the counseling session, the counselor talked with Andre who is the only son of a
single mother who works as a hair dresser, to identify the next cause of action. The session was
intended to help Andre look at the brighter side of things. In the process of the session, Andre
revealed that he was a Christian and a believer in prayer. Andre was helped to realize that all was
not lost and that he could sill achieve his dream and support his child. Thus he was able to
overcome his fears.

counselor is physically present they should take a step further and give their clients their
undivided attention. Behaviors such as mirroring the body, nodding and eye contact have to be
part of this form of listening. In the case of this session this form of listening that makes up
listening skill was evident for instance, the counselor was able to see the facial expressions of
Andre throughout the sessions and how the body language changed deepening on what he was
saying. Furthermore, the counselor was physically present for the session.
Listening is also achieved through another form called active listening. Nelson-Jones
(2016) explains that active listening happens when the counselor is listening with the heart, body
ears and eyes. In other words, when the client is talking, the psychiatrist’s emotions must
connect with the client’s em...
