General Description of Depression
Depression is a prevalent and serious medical condition that negatively impacts an
individual’s feelings, thoughts, and actions. It is a treatable disorder that results in increased
feelings of sadness accompanied by a loss interest in previously enjoyed activities. It is
associated with numerous emotional and physical problems and the decreased capacity of an
individual to function at work and home (Taylor, 2008). Some of the prevalent symptoms of
depression include: increased feelings of sadness; loss of interest in activities that one enjoyed
previously; changes in appetite, for instance weight loss or weight gain; sleeplessness; fatigue;
purposeless physical movement; increased feelings of guilt of worthlessness; difficulty
concentrating; indecisiveness; and feelings of suicide. The condition is estimated to affect one in
every 15 adults annually, with one in every 6 individuals experiencing depression in their
lifetime. Although depression can occur at any time, it averagely appears in one’s late teens or
mid-20s. Women have been known to be highly probable to experience depression in relation to
their male counterparts, with a third of women shown to experience a depressive episode in the
