Description

1. The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services was established in 1965. Its main function is to run Medicare and Medicaid programs. It also runs the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP). Medicare was established in 1966. It covers citizens over the age of 65 and the disabled. Medicaid is a state-run program that subsidizes or covers health care for low income or other disabled individuals that are not eligible for Medicare services. CMS also provides regulations and sets expectations for coverage, bill procedures and other guidelines to determine payment. Most commercial health insurance plans and Medicaid programs look to CMS to provide clear examples for reimbursements and procedures.

2.The State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) became effective in 1997 which would allow states to provide health insurance to children in working families where they made too much money to receive Medicaid but could not afford the private health insurance. For many years these children were going without health insurance because the parent could only afford to get the employee-based insurance on themselves. The SCHIP plan is a form of Medicaid which started covering children and adults in the mid-1960. They later started the SCHIP plan to help get health insurance to more children. The SCHIP plan give different level for families and they will offer regular doctor visits, dental visits, eye care, prescription, and Emergency visits. For some of the families this is free, others will have to pay just a portion of the premium, and some of the families will pay full premium. But the cost is still much less than getting private health insurance.
