STUDENT POSTING There are several different therapies that can be used to help an individual heal and recover. Whether its music, imagery, humor, or yoga, each alternative therapy effectiveness depends on how well the individual partaking in the alternative therapy reacts to the treatment. Of all the alternative therapy methods, both music and humor therapy methods both have distinct characteristics.When it comes to humor therapy, also known as laughter therapy, it is universally tolerated and has very limited side effects. Laughing therapy relaxes the muscles and improves breathing. It raises the pain threshold, increases tolerance and improves psychological well-being. It also increases friendliness and collaboration and facilitates group identity, solidarity and cohesiveness. By decreasing stress-making hormones floating in the blood, laughter removes the effects of stress (Demir, 2015). Both music and therapy have the same characteristics in the way that they both promote the reduction of stress and allow for emotion expression.Music therapy encourages emotional expression, socialization and exploration of various therapeutic themes. Research shows the benefits of music therapy for various mental health conditions, including depression, trauma, and schizophrenia (to name a few). Music acts as a medium for processing emotions, trauma, and grief—but music can also be utilized as a regulating or calming agent for anxiety or for dysregulation (Warren, 2016). Just like humor therapy, there are very limited side effects when utilizing music therapy and it has the ability to improve one’s psychological well-being.When dealing with client’s with chronic pain, the most effective alternative therapy that will prove beneficial would be humor therapy. Gastric cancer is a form of cancer that causes chronic pain to those who have it within their gastric area. A case of a patient diagnosed as having advanced gastric cancer showed that laughter therapy had the effect of reducing the stress experienced and the patient maintains a good condition five years after the initial diagnosis (Demir, 2015). Laughter therapy also has the capability to significantly lower the degree of depression, stress, and anxiety within an individual when used consistently. 2nd student postingIn this discussion I will be comparing and contrasting music intervention and Guided Imagery alternative therapies for pain. As part of a pain management plan, music can soothe, relax, and provide a calming distraction from pain. Music has the power to soothe, inspire, energize, and uplift. Research shows it can also help manage pain in people who are living with chronic pain. Music therapy for pain management is offered by many pain centers and cancer centers, and helps many people find solace and relief. (Thompson, 201). Music therapy works in chronic pain management by providing sensory stimulation that evokes a response in the patient. Research has found that music used as a clinical intervention can help patients by: -reducing the amount of pain they receive-promoting the relaxation, rhythmic breathing, and rest-alleviating anxiety and stress-giving their mood a boost. On the other hand, based on the belief that the mind can influence the body, guided imagery is used to relieve symptoms, heal disease, or promote relaxation. It is based on the belief that the mind and body are interconnected and work together in the healing process. A person can use guided imagery alone or be led by a practitioner. Sessions can last 10-30 minutes. Different imaging is used as a person is guided through the process. A quiet place, free from distractions, is needed. Numerous studies have demonstrated physiologic and biochemical changes. ((Eliopoulos, 2018, p. 454). Both guided imagery and music therapy technique help reduce the need for medication, but medications should not be adjusted or stopped without first checking with a primary healthcare professional. I believe between the two techniques, guided imagery is most specific. Almost any medical situation can benefit from guided imagery, especially if problem solving, relaxation, decision making, or symptom relief is useful. Guided imagery supports the Hering’s law of cure which states that ‘we heal from the head down’. This means that before we can even begin to heal we must believe we can heal. We must be mentally prepared and strong in order to allow the body to heal. We must not doubt the body's ability to heal itself. As someone who has had first-hand experience with the Hering’s law of cure I believe it is more effective.
