Sample Outline Title: The Ice Cream Making Process Purpose: To inform my audience about the steps in the ice cream making process. Thesis: I will inform my audience about how ingredients are selected, mixed and frozen to create ice cream. Introduction: I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream, but how many of us really understands how our favorite treat is made? I’m an ice cream addict, so I did some research, and today I’d like to share with you what I learned about how ingredients are chosen, mixed and frozen to create the ultimate dessert! I. Main Point #1: Ingredient Selection * Subpoint A. Seasonal options- cheaper and easier to get local, seasonal ingredients Citation: In a Time Magazine article published last June, ice cream gurus Ben and Jerry said “[insert quote here]” * Subpoint B. Taste Combinations- some things work, others won’t. * Subpoint C. Prep- washing, cutting, drying, etc. Transition #1: Once the ingredients have been chosen, it’s not enough to just mash them together and dump them in the freezer. They must be carefully mixed to ensure just the right texture and consistency. II. Main Point #2: Mixing the Ingredients * Subpoint A. Machines involved in mixing * Subpoint B. Timing- how long to mix, depending on the texture you want * Subpoint C. Techniques- air content and texture Citation: According to a 2011 interview with “The Dairy Godmother”, “it is important to mix in just the right amount of air.” Transition #2: It’s a lot of work to choose just the right ingredients and combine them properly, but all of that hard work will be for nothing if you don’t freeze the mixture just right! III. Main Point #3: Freezing * Subpoint A. Containers- stainless steel, copper, etc. Citation: The Cornell Dairy lab is famous for its ice cream experiments and in 2008, it published an article arguing that ice cream should be kept in metal containers for best results. * Subpoint B. Time- texture, softness, etc. * Subpoint C. Temperature- avoiding ice crystals or separation Transition #3: The more precise you are with your procedure, the better and more consistent your final product will be. Conclusion: As you can see, this simple dessert is NOT so simple to make. So the next time you buy a cone, remember all of the hard work that went in to preparing, mixing and freezing those delicious ingredients so that you can enjoy ice cream any time you like.
